School's out, what did you expect?

* Beginning tomorrow here in DC, ad for reform of marijuana laws will be displayed at the Capital South and Union Station Metro stations. The ad shows a group of ordinary people standing behind prison bars under the headline, "Marijuana Laws Waste Billions of Taxpayer Dollars to Lock Up Non-Violent Americans." excerpt:

"After a legal battle between a coalition of drug policy reform groups and the federal government over a law that would have eliminated federal funding of transportation authorities that ran such ads, a federal district court ruled the law unconstitutional in June 2004. The government appealed from the district court's decision to the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on August 2.

"The lawsuit is ACLU et al., v. Norman Y. Mineta. The government's appeal is expected to be heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit some time in 2005. The plaintiffs are represented by the Washington D.C. law firm of Arnold & Porter LLP.

"'Reasonable people can disagree about drug policy, but Congress cannot constitutionally censor one side of that discussion,' said Arthur B. Spitzer, Legal Director of the ACLU of the National Capital Area. 'We look forward to protecting the First Amendment rights of those committed to reforming marijuana laws at the court of appeals level.'"

* Jim Wilkeson is "amazed, baffled, and saddened by the utter ignorance of people who still plan to vote for George W. Bush in the coming election." excerpt:

"Please. Give me a competent jerk over a likeable fool when it comes to running my country. I'll never have the opportunity to sit down and have a beer with the guy, so why the hell should I care if he's a nice guy or not?

"I appeal to all of those people who plan to vote for George Bush on November 2 to take a good, hard look at the potential harm your vote will cause. History will prove that a four-year presidency of George Bush was one of the most corrupt and damaging ever. If he's given four more years, there may not be much history left."

* Observation: The guitar line (moreso) and song structure (less so) of Pavement's 'Range Life' (song 9 on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, recorded 1993) are extremely similar to the guitar line and song structure of Velvet Crush's 'Asshole' (song 9 on In the Presence of Greatness, recorded 1990, 1991). For what its worth.
