friday morning brautigan

richard brautigan wrote these poems in 1956, at age 21. he then gave them to edna webster and they remained virtually unknown and unpublished for over 40 years.

CALLED WAR

I never want
to go away
to a place
called war

i don't think
you want
to go there either.

ALL THE CITIES AT ONCE

pretend
is
a city
bigger
than New York.

bigger than
all the cities
at once

PHANTOM KISS

there
is no worse
hell
than
to remember
vividly
a kiss
that
never occured

richard yates never liked brautigan.
